De Amerikaanse glam/hardrock band Steel Panther brengt op vrijdag 24 februari 2023 zijn gloednieuwe (6e) studio-album ‘On The Prowl’ uit, de opvolger van het album ‘Heavy Metal Rules‘ uit 2019.

The Mars Model – Primal Urge 

Bands die hun eigen ding doen, hun identiteit koesteren, dat siert hen. The Mars Model is zo’n band. Ze trekken zich niks aan van wat er muzikaal rond hen gebeurt. Ze maken songs en werken die af naar hùn gevoel en ideeën. Hun stijl kan je omschrijven als dark/new wave. Na hun EP “Francobelgica” is hier “Primal Urge”. Een schijf met zes songs. Er wordt afgetrapt met een snijdende synth waarna een donkere gitaarriff weerklinkt en ondersteund wordt door een bonkende drum. Je wordt meegesleurd in een sfeer dat later typerend blijkt te zijn voor de band. “Baby Paria is cold, so cold”. Het is dansen geblazen bij ‘Ultramega’. Stilstaan is onmogelijk. Een cathy refrein pakt u bij uw nekvel. ‘Man of the Year’ is iets trager maar niet minder aanstekelijk. Het diepe stemgeluid van zanger Hans Verbeke geeft een bijzondere toets aan de song. Het strakke drumwerk van Tim Jult werkt opzwepend. De gitaarriff van ‘Showdown’ is pure rock. Een rechttoe-rechtaan song. Het baswerk van Fred Dufour stuwt tijdens het refrein de song de hoogte in.

‘Atrocity’ is een song vol roffelende drums en krachtige samenzang. De dreigende synths van Olivier Moulin komen goed tot zijn recht. Het typische gitaargeluid van Dominique De Candt drukt zijn stempel op afsluiter ‘F.D.M.’ . “Yes Sir, Yes Sir, i’m gonna be a Fascist Destroyer Machine”

The Mars Model heeft een sterk product afgeleverd en ik heb het niet enkel over de songs. De opnames zijn uitstekend en de verhouding onder de instrumenten is top.  De synths van Olivier zorgen voor een vol geluid en de ritmesectie Dufour/Jult brengen de songs zo strak dat het live een feest is. Ik spreek uit ervaring.

De Nederlandse symfonische metalband Epica heeft vandaag het toepasselijk getitelde mini-album 'The Alchemy Project' uitgebracht, dat zeven nieuwe nummers bevat die samen met dertien gastartiesten geschreven en opgenomen werden: Fleshgod Apocalypse, Kamelot, Uriah Heep, Shining, Delain, Myrkur, MaYaN, Soilwork, God Dethroned, Aborted, Wintersun, Insomnium en Powerwolf.

Voor deze speciale gelegenheid presenteert Epica bovendien ook nog een waar muzikaal juweeltje in de vorm van de nieuwe single-video 'Sirens - Of Blood And Water'. Het is een angstaanjagend donkere track met een majestueus refrein, en werd mede geschreven en uitgevoerd met melodic metal koningin Charlotte Wessels en folk/black metal pionier Myrkur. Samen met Simone Simons vormen deze 3 leading ladies van de heavy muziek de meest spectaculaire drie-eenheid van deze winter.

Simone Simons: "Charlotte en ik gaan al lang terug, maar we hebben nooit echt samen aan muziek gewerkt. Sinds ze haar solonummers begon uit te brengen, werd ik een bewonderaar van haar werk en nam ik contact met haar op om een nummer te maken voor 'The Alchemy Project'. Die samenwerking resulteerde in het prachtige beklijvende lied 'Sirens - Of Blood And Water'. We hebben allebei een fascinatie voor zeemeerminnen, voor het sprookje van H.C. Andersen, en wilden een lied schrijven vanuit het perspectief van de zusjes van de kleine zeemeermin. Ik vond het geweldig hoe onze creatieve geesten in het nummer stroomden en dat Myrkur - die toevallig Deens is net als de auteur van het verhaal, haar unieke stem aan het nummer toevoegde - de perfecte match was die we nodig hadden om het verhaal compleet te maken."

After releasing the hammering first single, “Scandinavian Gods”, CANDLEMASS have now unveiled the title track from their upcoming album, carrying the torch of heavy doom to the next level and showcasing that, after almost 40 years of existence, their creativity sees no bounds! “Sweet Evil Sun” kicks in with warning guitar feedback before sludging a heavy-as-hell riff as Johan Langquist deftly warbles through melancholic, beckoning passages and a hooky chorus. His imposing vocals fit each riff and tone perfectly, emerging as an instrument in itself. A brand new official music video underlines this massive wall of sound the appropriate way, heating up the anticipation for everything that is about to come!

Review: The Dead Daisies - Radiance

The Dead Daisies is een hard-rock bedrijf van Amerikaans-Australische makelij. Het heeft zes albums op zijn naam staan en onderging zeventien (!) muzikantenwissels. De oorzaak van deze wissels zijn mij onbekend maar zeker is dat kwaliteit niet aan de basis zal liggen. Ik denk dat we het meer moeten zoeken bij “ego’s” en “karakters”. Hun muziek kan je omschrijven als stevige bluesy hard rock. De band met huidige bezetting: Glenn Hughes (bas-zang), Doug Aldrich (gitaar), Brian Tichy (drums) en David Lowy (gitaar) heeft met dit zesde album ‘Radiance’ een klasseplaat afgeleverd. Tenminste voor de liefhebbers van het genre. Voor sommigen misschien oubollig, voor anderen een topplaat. Laat mij eerlijk zijn: ik hield mijn hart vast toen ik de naam “Glenn Hughes” zag staan. Zijn soloprojecten vind ik maar zus en zo en bij live-gigs is het ego belangrijker dan zijn performance. Maar op ‘Radiance’ is hij gewoonweg verbluffend. Zijn zangstijl en stem zit werkelijk gegoten in de songs. Nooit overdreven uithalen en nodeloos rekken. Wat een controle. De gitaristen zijn om vingers en duimen af te likken. En het slagwerk is super. Een zeer goede productie. Uiteraard hoor je gitaarriedeltjes die je eerder hoorde maar hey..Dit is het genre én het is zeer goed gebracht. Op ‘Radiance’ staan tien songs.

Opener ‘Face Your Fear’ is een meestamper van formaat met heerlijk gitaarwerk. ‘Hypnotize Yourself’ is een bluesy mid-tempo song met zeer mooie zangpartijen. Hughes haalt hier moeiteloos de hoge noten maar gelukkig wordt dit niet uitgemolken over de gehele song. Een iets snellere song is ‘Shine On’ . Titeltrack ‘Radiance’ is traag en heeft gedubte zang in het refrein. ‘Born To Fly’ is een ambiancemaker. Heerlijk swingend. Synths zijn goed geplaatst. ‘Kiss The Sun’ wordt ingeleid met een talkbox. Doug Aldrich ontbindt zijn duivels. Het refrein is een earworm. Afsluiter ‘Roll On’ is een schitterend gezongen bluessong dat langzaam wordt opgebouwd met strijkers (synths) op de achtergrond.

RADIANCE is schitterende hard-rockplaat geworden. Hun beste tot nu toe als je het mij vraagt. Het genre is met deze plaat ‘veilig’ gesteld.  Hopelijk doet de jonge generatie metalheads eens de moeite om hier (aandachtig) naar te luisteren.
